INTRODUCTION:
The 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is frequently employed to evaluate the exercise
capacity of individuals with respiratory conditions and to monitor functional
changes due to disease progression. The 6-minute walk Work (6MWW) is a
measure that combines the distance covered during the 6MWT with the person's
body weight.
AIM:
To investigate the correlations between plethysmographic parameters with the
6MWW as well as the 6-Minutes-Walk Distnace (6MWD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
It was a cross-sectional study, conducted in the department of physiology and
functional explorations of Farhat HACHED hospital, including patients who
consulted our department for pulmonary function assessment. The 6MWW was
calculated as follows: 6MWD*body weight.
RESULTS:
A total of 50 patients were included, among them 58% were males. Mean±SD of
age and BMI were 54±12 years and 27±6 kg/m2, respectively. The 6MWW was
more correlated to plethysmographic parameters than the 6-Minutes-Walk
distance (6MWD): FEV1 (r=0.395; p=0.007 vs. r=109; p=0.476), FVC (r=0.513; p=0.001
vs. r=0.370; p=0.012), TLC (r=0.371; p=0.014 vs. r=0.355; p=0.019). However, the
FEV1/FVC ratio was correlated with 6MWD (r= -0.299; p=0.046) but not with the
6MWW (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION:
Our study demonstrated that 6MWW showed stronger correlations with
plethysmographic parameters compared to 6MWD alone in patients undergoing
pulmonary function assessment. These findings suggest the potential utility of
6MWW as a complementary measure for assessing exercise capacity and
pulmonary function in respiratory conditions.
